What Is Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS)?

Endobronchial ultrasound, commonly called EBUS, combines bronchoscopy with ultrasound technology. A thin, flexible bronchoscope equipped with an ultrasound probe is passed through the mouth and into the airways.

The ultrasound provides detailed images of structures surrounding the airways, including lymph nodes and other areas that may not be easily evaluated with conventional bronchoscopy alone.

When necessary, the physician can use EBUS to guide a small needle to collect tissue or cell samples. These samples can then be examined in a laboratory to help establish a diagnosis.

Why Is an EBUS Procedure Performed?

Your pulmonologist may recommend EBUS when additional information is needed after a chest X-ray, CT scan or other pulmonary evaluation.

EBUS may be used to help evaluate:

  • Enlarged lymph nodes in the chest
  • Abnormal findings on a chest CT scan
  • Lung nodules or masses
  • Persistent or unexplained respiratory symptoms
  • Infections involving the lungs or lymph nodes
  • Inflammatory lung diseases such as sarcoidosis
  • Suspected or diagnosed lung cancer
  • Other abnormalities involving the lungs and surrounding structures

The specific reason for recommending EBUS will depend on your symptoms, medical history and previous test results.

EBUS and Lymph Node Biopsy

One of the important advantages of EBUS is its ability to help physicians reach certain lymph nodes located around the airways without requiring a surgical incision.

During EBUS-guided transbronchial needle aspiration (EBUS-TBNA), ultrasound images help the pulmonologist guide a thin needle to the targeted lymph node or abnormal area. Small samples can then be collected for laboratory analysis.

This can provide valuable diagnostic information while using a minimally invasive approach.

What Should I Expect During an EBUS Procedure?

Before your procedure, your healthcare team will provide instructions regarding medications, eating and drinking, and arrival time.

Sedation or anesthesia is generally used to keep you comfortable during the procedure. The pulmonologist carefully guides the bronchoscope through the airways while viewing ultrasound images of nearby structures.

If an abnormal area or lymph node needs to be evaluated, tissue samples may be collected during the same procedure.

Your physician will discuss the findings with you and explain when biopsy or laboratory results can be expected.

Is EBUS the Same as Bronchoscopy?

EBUS is a specialized type of bronchoscopy.

Traditional bronchoscopy allows a physician to look directly inside the airways. EBUS adds ultrasound imaging, allowing the pulmonologist to also examine structures outside and around the airways, particularly lymph nodes.

Depending on your condition, your pulmonologist will determine whether standard bronchoscopy, EBUS or another diagnostic procedure is most appropriate.

Frequently Asked Questions About Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS)

What is an Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS)?

Endobronchial Ultrasound, or EBUS, is a minimally invasive procedure that combines bronchoscopy with ultrasound imaging. It allows a pulmonologist to view the airways and nearby structures, including lymph nodes, and obtain tissue samples when needed.

Why would my pulmonologist recommend EBUS?

EBUS may be recommended to evaluate enlarged lymph nodes, lung nodules, abnormal chest CT findings, infections, inflammatory conditions such as sarcoidosis, or suspected lung cancer. Your pulmonologist will determine whether EBUS is appropriate based on your imaging, symptoms, and medical history.

Can a biopsy be performed during EBUS?

Yes. During EBUS, a pulmonologist can use ultrasound guidance to obtain small tissue or cell samples from certain lymph nodes or other areas near the airways. These samples are then sent to a laboratory for evaluation.

Is EBUS the same as a regular bronchoscopy?

EBUS is a specialized form of bronchoscopy. A standard bronchoscopy allows the physician to examine the inside of the airways, while EBUS adds ultrasound imaging to evaluate structures surrounding the airways, particularly lymph nodes.

Will I be awake during an EBUS procedure?

Sedation or anesthesia is typically used to help keep patients comfortable during EBUS. Your healthcare team will explain how to prepare for the procedure and what type of sedation or anesthesia is planned.

How long does it take to get EBUS biopsy results?

The timing depends on the type of samples collected and the laboratory testing required. Your pulmonologist will let you know when results are expected and discuss the findings and any recommended next steps with you.

Where can I see a pulmonologist about EBUS near Vienna, VA?

NOVA Pulmonary Critical Care and Sleep Associates provides pulmonary evaluation and advanced diagnostic services for patients in Vienna, Tysons, McLean, Fairfax, Falls Church, Oakton, and surrounding Northern Virginia communities.
