What is Sleep Sex (sexsomnia)

Sleep sex, clinically known as sexsomnia, is a type of parasomnia that involves engaging in sexual acts while in a state of sleep. Here are the key features of sleep sex:

Symptoms

  • Involuntary Sexual Behavior: Individuals may engage in sexual activities such as masturbation, fondling, or intercourse without being fully awake or aware.
  • Amnesia for the Episode: Most people do not remember the episode upon waking.
  • Possible Distress: Partners may feel confused or distressed about the behavior, particularly if they were unaware of it at the time.

Causes

The exact causes of sexsomnia are not fully understood, but several factors may contribute:

  • Sleep Disorders: Conditions such as sleep apnea, narcolepsy, or other parasomnias (like sleepwalking) may be linked to sexsomnia.
  • Sleep Deprivation: Lack of sufficient sleep can increase the likelihood of experiencing parasomnias.
  • Stress and Anxiety: High levels of stress or anxiety can trigger sleep disturbances.

Diagnosis

Diagnosis is primarily based on:

  • Sleep History: A detailed account of episodes from both the individual and their partner.
  • Sleep Studies: In some cases, a polysomnography (sleep study) may be conducted to observe sleep patterns and behaviors.

Treatment

Management options may include:

  • Sleep Hygiene: Improving sleep practices, such as maintaining a regular sleep schedule and creating a calming bedtime environment.
  • Addressing Underlying Issues: Treating any sleep disorders or stressors that may contribute to sexsomnia.
  • Safety Precautions: Ensuring a safe sleeping environment to prevent injury during episodes.

If sexsomnia is frequent or causing distress, consulting a sleep specialist or healthcare provider is important for proper evaluation and management.
