This test is quick, safe, and highly informative for patients of all ages with pulmonary or cardiovascular concerns.

How the Six-Minute Walk Test Is Performed

At Nova Pulmonary’s Vienna clinic, the 6MWT is performed safely and efficiently:

  1. Initial Assessment
Your provider reviews your medical history, current medications, and baseline oxygen levels.
  2. Preparation
    • You wear comfortable clothing and shoes suitable for walking.
    • Oxygen monitoring devices (pulse oximeter) are placed to track oxygen levels and heart rate.
  3. The Walk
    • You walk back and forth along a measured hallway or track for six minutes at your own pace.
    • Staff monitor your oxygen saturation, heart rate, and symptoms such as shortness of breath or fatigue.
    • Most patients tolerate this test very well, and you can slow down or pause if needed while our staff monitors you
  4. Post-Test Evaluation
    • The distance you walked is recorded.
    • Results are compared to predicted norms based on age, sex, and height.
    • Your physician interprets the data to guide treatment or recommend rehabilitation exercises.
